This scalable reaction protocol can be used for the synthesis of terminal carbonates at room temperature as well as for the synthesis of internal carbonates below 100 °C.

 A Versatile Family of Renewable Platform Chemicals

As easy as ABC-DBU: Building blocks of isohexides extended by one carbon atom at the 2- or 5-positions are now synthetically accessible by a convenient, selective, base-catalyzed epimerization of the corresponding dinitriles. Kinetic experiments using the strong organic base 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) show that all three possible isohexide dinitrile isomers exist within a dynamic equilibrium. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that the observed crystal structures are indeed the lowest energy conformers of these isohexide derivatives.

Compare and contrast: Light-driven interfacial electron transfer was investigated with a series of [Ru(dtb)2(LL)](PF6)2 compounds in which LL is a bipyridine ligand with either alcohol binding groups or carboxylic acid groups (as a reference). The sensitizer with two terminal CH2OH groups was found to exhibit more efficient electron injection and slower back electron transfer than the more commonly used dicarboxylic acid containing ligand.

Be my guest. We measured the binding affinity of five molecular container compounds toward seven drugs of abuse and found two calabadion containers with broad spectrum affinity. X-ray crystal structures elucidated the geometry of the complexes with methamphetamine. Administration of one calabadion to rats treated with methamphetamine ameliorated the hyperlocomotive activity of the drug.

The cyclisation mechanisms of two diterpene cyclases, one from the social amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum and the other from the bacterium Streptomyces clavuligerus, were investigated by isotopic labelling experiments. Substrate isomerization by allylic transposition of diphosphate, in analogy to a well established mechanism for mono- and sesquiterpene biosynthesis, takes part in the formation of products with Z-configured double bonds.

The (120)-texturized films present lower photocurrents, because the charge carriers need to hop between ribbon structures, whereas (221)-texturized films, with easier charge transport along the covalent bonds, have an optimized photocurrent for hydrogen gas evolution.

Pure and simple: The deposition of NiO is studied in pure aprotic dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) medium and in DMSO/water mixtures through cathodic reduction reactions. After annealing these layers at a sufficient temperature to eliminate DMSO, pores are released and mesoporous films are formed. These solvent-templated electrodeposited layers are applied to p-type dye-sensitized solar cells.
