Perovskite phases: Highly crystalline oxonitride perovskites (LnTaON2 Ln=La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd) were synthesized by the ammonothermal approach in custom-built high-pressure autoclaves at relatively low temperatures between 870–1070 K and pressures of up to 300 MPa. This more sophisticated route requires no precursor and gave cube-like crystals up to 15 &#x3BC;m (see scheme).

Let it shine: A novel fluorophore 8AQ containing an isobutylene unit exhibits a significant AIE feature and remarkable ratiometric response to Zn2+ in solution as well as intracellular bio-imaging behavior in human liver cancer cells. Conversely, fluorophore 8WB, which lacks the isobutylene moiety did not exhibit any significant fluorescent properties as a result of its more flexible molecular structure.

A good reception: Dipyrrolyldiketone BF2 complexes with amide units at pyrrole &#x3B1;-positions were synthesized and showed extremely high anion-binding affinities through multiple hydrogen bonding (see figure). Anion-binding behavior examined by 1H NMR spectroscopy along with theoretical studies suggested rapid pyrrole inversions in solution state. In the solid state, chiral helical structures of an anion-free receptor and ion-pairing assemblies of anion complexes were formed through hydrogen bonding.

Chaperone‐Polymer‐Assisted, Photodriven DNA Strand Displacement

The cover picture shows how a reversible DNA-strand-displacement system is photoregulated, and assisted by a chaperon polymer, PLL-g-Dex. With visible light irradiation, a strand incorporated with azobenzene moieties (in the trans form) can hybridize its complementary strand and release another without any toehold domain; with UV irradiation, these azobenzenes (in the cis form) devastatingly destabilize the duplex, resulting in reversed strand displacement. This clean and reversible light-driven process subverts these defects in classical toehold strand displacement and is expected to bring in a new tool in nucleic acid isothermal amplification and DNA nanotechnology. Light-controllable biomimetic glue: Expansion of the genetic code with the noncanonical amino acid (ncAA) ortho-nitrobenzyl 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (ONB-DOPA) allows the production of photoactivatable mussel adhesive proteins in vivo. Carrying the ncAA at multiple sites, these proteins show spatiotemporally controllable adhesive properties.
